Your DNA sequence is fixed. But which genes are switched on or off is not.

The genome has long been understood as the fixed blueprint of biological identity. What epigenetics reveals is that the readout of that blueprint — which genes are expressed and at what levels — is highly dynamic and responsive to environmental conditions.

Mechanisms of Epigenetic Regulation

  • DNA methylation: Addition of methyl groups to cytosine residues generally silences gene expression.
  • Histone modification: Chemical modifications to histone proteins alter chromatin accessibility and gene transcription.
  • Non-coding RNA: MicroRNAs regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally.

The Gut Microbiome as an Epigenetic Mediator

SCFAs produced by gut bacteria — particularly butyrate — are potent epigenetic modulators. Butyrate inhibits histone deacetylases (HDACs), promoting increased expression of tumour suppressor genes and anti-inflammatory mediators. The microbiome is thus a dynamic interface between environment and gene expression.

A patient's genetic risk is real — but whether and how that risk expresses itself is shaped by their microbiome, diet, and lifestyle. Both dimensions of data are necessary for truly informed clinical decisions.
